POSITION OVERVIEW

The Controls Engineering Manager will manage the activities of a group of Electrical Design and Controls Engineers with varying experience levels and skillsets, to ensure that all functional, technical, schedule, and budget requirements are met during the development of controls designs, programs, and supporting documentation. The Manager will work closely with internal groups including Project Management, Engineering, Purchasing, Service, and Manufacturing to coordinate activities across many projects simultaneously.The position will coordinate frequently with the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the Service Manager, and all of the Project Managers to ensure that appropriate controls engineering resources are available to support all design, program/setup, and documentation needs. Based on project needs, the Manager may be required to perform the duties of a Controls Engineer at the discretion of the Engineering Director.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES

The Controls Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the Controls Engineering staff – directing the development of controls designs, safety documents, programming/setup, and project documentation to meet customer specifications and expectations within set budgets and time constraints.

The principal duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the development of electrical designs, software, and support documents for custom assembly and test equipment.
  • Monitor conformance to equipment specifications and governing standards
  • Create and maintain a flexible schedule for the Controls Engineering staff that balances individual project needs and resource availability
  • Monitor project schedules and budgets and act quickly to correct any potential negative variance
  • Support the Controls Engineering staff with the necessary training and instruction to allow them to maintain an understanding of the latest technology for designing and programming custom automation
  • Ensure that regular and open communication takes place with other internal department managers, as well as communication between the Controls Engineers and their peers
  • Support project kick-off meetings, and assign the appropriate resources based on the project's technical content and schedule
  • Create and/or maintain process documentation and standards for the Controls Engineering group, and verify the Controls Engineers are following the process steps that have been established
  • Develop and implement methods to monitor and measure the performance of the Controls Engineering staff and associated processes. Implement strategies to help the engineers and/or processes become as efficient as possible
  • Perform periodic performance reviews and career planning/development for all members of the Controls Engineering staff in accordance with company policy
  • Some travel required, including overnight travel – potentially domestic and international

Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of ten years of electrical design, programming, and/or engineering experience—five years of engineering experience within the special machine industry preferred.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • As a member of HAHN Automation Group US, applicants must be able to interact safely in a manufacturing environment. This includes:
  • Full body mobility with the ability to bend, stoop, climb, and lift or move 25 lbs. of weight
  • The ability to walk within restricted areas of the company manufacturing plant
  • Professional conduct regarding hygiene and dress
  • The ability to read and prepare business documents as well as conduct business over the telephone in a sometimes-loud environment
  • The ability to sit or stand for long periods
  • The ability to travel to customer, supplier, and/or inter-company sites via vehicle or airplane (both domestic and international)
  • Valid driver’s license with driving record of acceptable risk as defined by HAHN Automation Group US’s insurance company
